Sukawati is a district in Gianyar Regency, Bali, Indonesia. As of the 2010 census, the area was 55.02 km 2 and the population was 110,429; [ 1 ] the latest official estimate (as at mid 2019) is 125,470.
Tjokorda Raka Sukawati (3 May 1931 – 11 November 2014) was an Indonesian engineer who invented Sosrobahu. He was born and died in Ubud , Bali , and in 2019 was conferred honorary T. Washington Fellow in science posthumously.
Tjokorda Ngurah Wim Sukawati, (1 February 1923 – 24 February 2013) was the eldest son of the President of the State of East Indonesia and former King of Ubud Tjokorda Gde Raka Soekawati and his wife Gusti Agung Niang Putu. His title Tjokorda Gde indicates that Sukawati belonged to the highest ksatria (one of the four noble castes in Bali).

Sukawati family from the beginning of the XIX century ruled Ubud, the principality of Gianyar; the latter, in turn, depended on the Dutch administration. Hotel Tjampuhan was opened in 1928 and initially served as the royal guesthouse of the Ubud Palace, built under the instruction of King Tjokorda Gede Sukawati. [4] The guesthouse became the home for German artist Walter Spies, who came as a guest of the king's youngest son, Prince Tjokorda Gde Agung Sukawati. [5]
Sukawati today is a community that strongly supports all forms of artistry as well as dance and music. With the successful establishment of a reigning authority in Sukawati, palace retainers were sent in the late 1700s to secure the area of Ubud. A pair of cousins formed rival communities in Padang Tegal and further north in the area of Taman.
