The Chancellor of the university is the ceremonial head of the university who, in the name of the university, confers all degrees. The positions of Principal and Vice-Chancellor are merged, with the Vice-Chancellor responsible for the day-to-day running of the university and accountable to Council.
Zeblon Zenzele Vilakazi FRS (born 3 April 1969) has been Vice Chancellor of the Wits University in Johannesburg, South Africa since 1 January 2021. [1] Professor Vilakazi is a nuclear physicist. [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Prior to his promotion, he was Vice-Principal and Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research and Postgraduate Studies.
The University Council then shortlisted him as one of the possible candidates for the position of vice-chancellor, and on 19 May 2003 he was appointed vice-chancellor by the council. [7] [8] Nongxa was the first black vice-chancellor of Wits. [7] He was succeeded as vice-chancellor by Adam Habib on 1 June 2013.
She is married to Zeblon Vilakazi, an academic whom she met at Witwatersrand University as a student and who became vice chancellor of the university in 2021. [13] They have three children. [ 13 ] Her eldest daughter, Kamogelo, died in a car accident in 2015, aged 20.
Norma Glasgo Reid, Lady Birley (born 28 April 1952 in Limavady, Northern Ireland) was Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of the Witwatersrand. [1] A statistician, and health service researcher, she has also held the positions of director of an academic consultancy firm, Associate Professor of the University of Ulster, and an Honorary Professor of Sussex University.
