The Mooi rises near Koster and flows southwards. During its course it flows into the Klerkskraal Dam, Boskop Dam and the Potchefstroom Dam.After crossing the town of Potchefstroom it bends southwestwards, shortly bending westwards before it empties into the Vaal River near the border with the Free State, about 15 km east of Stilfontein.
Boskop is a small village 16 km north of Potchefstroom. In 1913, the Boskop Man was found here, the first local anatomically modern human skull to be discovered. Consisting only of a post office and railway station on the route Potchefstroom-Welverdiend, the name is Afrikaans and means 'bush hill'.
The protected area is situated around the Klipvoor Dam and the Moretele River. The park consists of woodland and open bushveld vegetation. The three main tarred roads are named Kgabo, Kubu and Tshwane. There are several camps, including Bakgatla and Manyane, serving the park. For day visitors, there is a restaurant and gift shop at the old Pilanesberg Magistrates Court. Near the centre of the park, there is an artificially constructed lake, the Mankwe Dam.
