Sikhs have a given name and one or both of a surname and a Khalsa name. The surname may be a family name (based on the name of the ancestral village) or a caste name. Different castes still exist today in some aspects of Punjabi culture; similarly to the Hindu caste system, this system is based on employment [citation needed] (ex. jatt signifies the farming caste).
Among the eighteen historical gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship) in Bangladesh, only five are extant. The Gurdwara Nanak Shahi of Dhaka is the principal and largest gurdwara in the country. Das is a common surname among all classes of Bengalis including Baidya, Bengali Kayastha, Mahishya, Tantubay, and others. [2] [3] In Bengal, the surname is also used by both Scheduled Castes [4] and General Castes. In Bihar, it is used by people belonging to Ambashtha and Karn Kayastha castes. [5]
The majority were from the northern Brahmin caste ,(Bhat (surname)) as the Prince Baba Changa shared the Brahmin heritage. The sangat also had many members from different areas of the Sikh caste spectrum, such as the Hindu Rajputs and Hindu Jats who joined due to Bhat Sikh missionary efforts.
