Chemisches Zentralblatt is the first and oldest abstracts journal published in the field of chemistry.It covers the chemical literature from 1830 to 1969 and describes therefore the "birth" of chemistry as science, in contrast to alchemy.
It was the first journal published by ACS and is still the society's flagship peer-reviewed publication. In 1907, Chemical Abstracts was established as a separate journal (it previously appeared within JACS), which later became the Chemical Abstracts Service, a division of ACS that provides chemical information to researchers and others worldwide.

The abstracts were published in ChemInform: Selected Abstracts in Chemistry from 1970 to 2016. It was originally published in two parts as Chemischer Informationsdienst: anorganische und physikalische Chemie and Chemischer Informationsdienst: organische Chemie, which merged in 1972 into the single Chemischer Informationsdienst, which superseded in part Chemisches Zentralblatt.
