The remaining 350 men from the original ten companies of the Virginia Regiment had been allocated to the two regular regiments of the expedition. [3] [4] After the defeat of the expedition, the Virginia Regiment was immediately reformed, with the General Assembly voting in 1755 to increase its size again, to 1,500 men organized in 16 companies.
The current main building was designed by architect Everett D. Woods after WWII as an elementary, middle, and high school for East Memphis. [3] [4] Construction began in 1946 and the first classes of grades K-10 took place in 1948, with 11th and 12th grade being added in 1949 and 1950 respectively.

Kirby High School – Hickory Hill was annexed by the City of Memphis in December 1998, thus placing the school in the Memphis City Schools system in fall 1999. Kirby primarily serves the southeast area of Memphis going to the current city-unincorporated county boundary line.
Most of the base housing is in Kentucky, the school was originally on the Kentucky side of the base, and it is operated by the Kentucky District of the U.S. Department of Defense Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools, along with all other schools on Fort Campbell and the schools on the Fort Knox base situated entirely in Kentucky.
The regiment originated from the Charles City-Henrico County Regiment of Militia founded in 1652. During the French and Indian War, the Virginia Regiment was organized and was the only colonial regiment incorporated into the British line (1754-1763) and saw action at the Battle of Jumonville Glen, Fort Necessity, and the Braddock and Forbes expeditions.
