The first RAF flight cadets began training in the United States in June 1941. The Army Air Corps (later Army Air Forces) maintained a small liaison detachment at each of these schools, however the RAF provided a cadre of officers for military supervision and training, while flight training was conducted by contract flying schools. [4] A large variety of aircraft were used for training, mostly designed and built by Curtiss, and still undergoing flight testing. Among the fleet included the first aircraft to take off from water. A naval outlying landing field (NOLF) or naval auxiliary landing field (NALF) is an auxiliary airfield with no based units or aircraft, and minimal facilities. They are used as a low-traffic locations for flight training, without the risks and distractions of other traffic at naval air stations or other large airfields.
