National Parks in the Netherlands. In the 1960s, national parks in the Netherlands were defined as areas of at least 10 square kilometres (3.9 sq mi) consisting of natural terrains, water and/or forests, with a special landscape and flora and fauna. [1] The first two national parks were founded in the 1930s by private organisations.
The Drents-Friese Wold National Park is a national park in the Dutch provinces of Friesland and Drenthe, covering more than 61 km 2 (24 sq mi), founded in 2000. It consists of forests, heath lands and drift-sands.
The island is a popular place to visit, especially the beaches. Because the island is isolated, because the use of cars by visitors is forbidden and because there are very few inhabitants and farmers on the island, it is one of the best protected Dutch national parks. There is a visitors centre in the village of Schiermonnikoog.

The park covers approximately 43 km 2 (17 sq mi) and attained national park status in 2002. The visitor center is located in the natural history museum Ecomare. In 1927 botanist Jac. P. Thijsse made an illustrated book about the flora and fauna on the island, and pointed out the major environmental values of the island.

Lauwersmeer National Park (Dutch: Nationaal Park Lauwersmeer) is a national park in the provinces of Friesland and Groningen in the Netherlands. It consists of the southern and eastern parts of the Lauwersmeer (previously Lauwerszee ).
The National Park occupies only half of the original Biesbosch area. The other half has been reclaimed and consists mostly of farmland. It can be divided into several parts as well: Dordtse Biesbosch; The part of the Biesbosch that borders the city of Dordrecht. It is located between the Sliedrechtse Biesbosch and the Hollandse Biesbosch.
