Infantry is the largest formation of the Singapore Army, comprising six active battalions—the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 8th and 9th Battalions, Singapore Infantry Regiment (SIR)—based in Clementi Camp, Kranji Camp III, Maju Camp, Mandai Hill Camp, Selarang Camp and, an undisclosed number of reservist battalions.
The 3rd Division was formed on 31 August 1970 with six units under its command, which was then known as Area III Command HQ. On 1 May 1976, Area III Command was redesignated as the 3rd Singapore Infantry Division. It became the Singapore Army's first combined arms division on 21 March 1991 and has since been known as the 3rd Singapore Division.
In 1928, the SSVF infantry was re-organised into 4 battalions. The 1st and 2nd battalions consisted of members of the Singapore Volunteer Corps (1,250 men). Besides the infantry, the rest of the SSVF consisted of the Singapore Royal Artillery (SRA), Singapore Royal Engineers, Singapore Armoured Car Company and 3 ambulance units.

[3] [4] In November 1976, HQ 6th Singapore Infantry Brigade, was formed under the 6th Division's command. [2] In November 1992, the 6th Division became a combined arms division as part of the reorganisation within the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), having at least one Infantry brigade and one Armour brigade, among others.
The 9th Division was formed on 1 October 1978 as a reserve division to manage and train reservist units before it became a combined arms division on 31 March 1992. [3] [4] On 1 January 1995, the 9th Division was restructured to include both active and reservist personnel.
