A limbo dancer A man participating in limbo in London. Limbo is a popular game, based on traditions that originated on the island of Tobago. The aim is to pass forwards under a low bar without falling or dislodging the bar. The dance originated as an event that took place at wakes in Tobago.
Julia Edwards (1933 – 24 May 2017) was a Trinidadian dancer and choreographer. Known as the "Queen of Limbo" or "First Lady of Limbo", she was responsible for popularizing limbo dancing as a performance in the 1950s and early 1960s, and for inventing many of its variations.

The accompanying chant used to egg on and lead the dancer to a successful exit went something like this: "kaiso, kaiso, kaiso" —– meaning "go forward, go ahead, more". The dance was later named limbo. Ka means go. Iso means forward. Kaiso therefore, means go forward in the Ibibio language of Southeastern Nigeria.
