Originally, the main campus was built in 1995 by Hestrup & Associates as Wredling Middle School with a capacity of 1300; in 1999–2000 it was expanded and converted into St. Charles' second high school [4] at a cost of $41,600,000. The 345,000 square-foot facility now includes a fine-arts wing, with an 880-seat auditorium.

It is part of Community Unit School District 303. The school was known as "St. Charles High School" from its opening in 1977 until fall of 2000 when a second school in the city, St. Charles North High School, was opened. At that time the school name changed to "St. Charles East High School."

The high school was built in 1915, and expanded multiple times to accommodate the growing student population. [4] In 1959, the city planned to widen Eighth Street which ended future opportunities for continued expansion. Subsequently, the school district decided to build a second campus in 1962 and classes began in 1964. [5]
