Bahrain International Airport (IATA: BAH, ICAO: OBBI) (Arabic: مطار البحرين الدولي, romanized: Maṭār al-Baḥrayn al-dwalī) is the international airport of Bahrain. Located on Muharraq Island , adjacent to the capital Manama and the city of Muharraq , it serves as the hub for the national carrier Gulf Air .
Riffa (Arabic: الرفاع, Ar-Rifāʿ) [1] is the second-largest city in the Kingdom of Bahrain in terms of area. [2] The city is divided into three parts: East Riffa , West Riffa and North Riffa .
Bahrain's strategic importance to the British led to the signing of a civil air agreement with the King of Bahrain in 1934. [2] The Royal Air Force established a base there in the area as RAF Bahrain on 22 May 1943, as part of RAF Iraq Command. It was renamed RAF Muharraq in 1963.
Muharraq (Arabic: المحرق, romanized: al-Muḥarraq) is Bahrain's third most populous city (after the capital Manama and Riffa) and served as its capital until 1932 when it was replaced by Manama. [2] [3] The population of Muharraq in 2020 was 263,373. The city is located on Muharraq Island.
