The Portrait of Napoleon III was first shown at the 1862 Universal Exhibition in London, on donation from the Emperor. Flandrin's painting was a standout wherever it was exhibited: the Universal Exhibition, Paris Salon (1863), at the Paris Ecole des Beaux-Arts (1864), and the Paris Exposition universelle (1867). At an early age, Hitler showed interest in the arts. His father hated the idea of his son becoming an artist instead of a government official like himself. Hitler's father tried to beat the idea out of him every time art or anything related was brought up. [2] This cycle went on for years until his father passed away suddenly.
