Canyon Lake is a popular stop along the Apache Trail (Arizona State Route 88) from Apache Junction, Arizona, passing Tortilla Flat, Arizona, before reaching Apache Lake and Roosevelt Lake behind Theodore Roosevelt Dam. In 2022, a fish kill caused by golden algae affected 100,000 fish. [1]

The CDP is located on the western edge of Gila County, on the south side of Theodore Roosevelt Lake, a reservoir on the Salt River. The western boundary of the CDP is the Maricopa County line. Arizona State Route 188 runs through Roosevelt, leading southeast 31 miles (50 km) to Globe, the Gila County seat, and northwest 48 miles (77 km) to Payson.
The second largest of the four Salt River Project reservoirs, Apache Lake is located about 5 miles (8 km) downstream from Theodore Roosevelt Lake (the largest), and upstream from Canyon Lake and Saguaro Lake. The surface area of the lake is 2,568 acres (1,039 ha) at full capacity and it can store 254,138 acre⋅ft (313,475,000 m 3) of water.
