Dijkstra's algorithm (/ ˈ d aɪ k s t r ə z / DYKE-strəz) is an algorithm for finding the shortest paths between nodes in a weighted graph, which may represent, for example, a road network. It was conceived by computer scientist Edsger W. Dijkstra in 1956 and published three years later.
The idea is that the road network is static, so the preprocessing phase can be done once and used for a large number of queries on the same road network. The algorithm with the fastest known query time is called hub labeling and is able to compute shortest path on the road networks of Europe or the US in a fraction of a microsecond. [14]
