Killer Croc was created by writer Gerry Conway and artist Gene Colan.The character made cameo appearances in Detective Comics #523 (February 1983) and Batman #357 (March 1983), with his full first appearance in Detective Comics #524 (March 1983).
Batman investigates the murder of Elizabeth Lupo, believed to have been killed by Killer Croc. Batman deduces that Lupo's brother Angel hired Croc to murder his sister. While chasing Angel down an alley, it appears the fleeing suspect murdered a father and mother leaving their son an orphan.
Killer Croc (voiced by Ron Perlman) is an anthropomorphic crocodile and crime boss. He rarely works on his own, tending to work with other villains. Killer Moth (voiced by Jeff Bennett) is a low-tier servant of the Penguin. He later transforms into a monstrous anthropomorphic moth after being exposed to radiation.
Inside, Batman confronts many of his enduring rogues gallery, such as the Joker, Two-Face, and Killer Croc. As Batman ventures deeper, he discovers the origin of how the asylum was established, the history of its founder Amadeus Arkham, and the supernatural and psychological mystery that has been haunting the mansion.
Batman gives Gordon an earpiece that will allow them to stay in contact and descends below ground, trying to find Cardinal O'Fallon and his abductor. A homeless man living in an abandoned subway station identifies the abductor as Killer Croc. Batman and Gordon briefly discuss the villain's past, but are cut off when Killer Croc ambushes Batman.
While hiding out from the police, Joker, the Penguin, Two-Face, Poison Ivy, and Killer Croc gather at the criminals-only Stacked Deck Club. While passing time with a card game, their conversation focuses on their mutual foe, Batman.
When Batman and Katana are ambushed by Killer Croc in the subway, they are trapped in a hole filled with liquid stone that dries quickly. Batman calls Alfred for assistance, but he is too far away to get there in time, and things become worse when he is knocked unconscious by Killer Croc.
