The Aizoaceae (/ eɪ z oʊ ˈ eɪ s iː ˌ iː,-s i ˌ aɪ /), or fig-marigold family, is a large family of dicotyledonous flowering plants containing 135 genera and about 1,800 species. Carpobrotus, commonly known as pigface, ice plant, sour fig, Hottentot fig, and clawberry is a genus of ground-creeping plants with succulent leaves and large daisy-like flowers. The name comes from the Ancient Greek karpos "fruit" and brotos "edible", referring to its edible fruits.
The ice plant forms large monospecific zones. Although the ice plant may have arrived by ship as early as the 16th century, [23] [24] C. edulis was actively introduced in the early 1900s to stabilize dunes [23] and soil along railroad tracks; it was later put to use by Caltrans for ground cover along freeway embankments. [23]
The plant usually uses C3 carbon fixation, but when it becomes water- or salt-stressed, it is able to switch to Crassulacean acid metabolism. [4] Like many salt-tolerant plants, M. crystallinum accumulates salt throughout its life, in a gradient from the roots to the shoots, with the highest concentration stored in epidermal bladder cells.
Unlike many ice plants, this species is hardy to −20 °F (−29 °C), successfully overwintering at locations such as Denver, Colorado and Chicago, Illinois. The leaves turn red in cold winter temperatures. Due to the low need for maintenance, it is suitable for urban environments and high temperature regions.
