[3] The family is in the monocot order Asparagales. The name is derived from Ancient Greek ἀγάπη (agápē) 'love' and ἄνθος (ánthos) 'flower'.

It was formerly treated as a separate family, Agapanthaceae. [1] The subfamily name is derived from the generic name of the type genus, Agapanthus.
