Blasting mats are used when explosives are detonated in places such as quarries or construction sites. The mats are placed over the blasting area to contain the blast, suppress noise [1] and dust as well as prevent high velocity rock fragments called fly rock (or flyrock) from damaging structures, [2] people or the environment in proximity to the blast site. [3]
Drilling and blasting currently utilizes many different varieties of explosives with different compositions and performance properties. The primary hazard of pyrotechnic blasting caps is that for proper usage, the fuse must be inserted and then crimped into place by crushing the base of the cap around the fuse. If the tool used to crimp the cap is used too close to the explosives, the primary explosive compound can detonate during crimping.
Blasting agents are explosive materials or mixtures which are not detonatable by standard #8 blasting caps. The best known blasting agent is ANFO explosive, a mixture containing primarily ammonium nitrate with a small quantity (typically around 6%) of fuel oil, most commonly diesel fuel. Other fuels and additives are used as well.
