New Camaldoli Hermitage (formally called Immaculate Heart Hermitage) is a rural Camaldolese Benedictine hermitage in the Santa Lucia Mountains of Big Sur, California, in the United States.
On June 24, 1928, he was born Ioannis Moraitis (Greek: Ιωάννης Μωραΐτης) in Volos, Greece.His parents were Demetrios and Victoria Moraitis. [1]Geronda Ephraim entered Mount Athos in 1947, where he was a disciple of the Athonite elder Saint Joseph the Hesychast.
The monastery that was located on the grounds began operating in 1864. The domed church was designed in 1869 by Irish-American architect Patrick Keely. [3] Its cornerstone was laid in 1869, [8] and it was completed in 1875. [4] It opened its doors later that year. [3] Additions to the complex were made in 1914, 1929, and 1944. [4]
The original abbey structures, including the present church, were designed by the German-American architect J. William Schickel and built between 1891 and 1905. The archabbey church was dedicated by bishop Regis Canevin of Pittsburgh on August 24, 1905 [ 3 ] and declared a minor basilica by Pius XII on the same date in 1955.
