The Middlebury C.V. Starr Schools Abroad, operated by Middlebury College in 17 countries across 5 continents, offer overseas academic programs for undergraduates from various U.S. institutions, as well as graduate-level programs for students from the Middlebury College Language Schools and the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.
Students gain work experience while being immersed in a foreign work environment, though the position may be paid or unpaid. Dependent upon the programme, a student working abroad may live in a dormitory or apartment with other students or with a "host family", a group of people who live in that country and agree to provide student lodging.
The school and its program was founded by Rev. John P. Felice, a Maltese Jesuit who had become a U.S. citizen. Felice's dream and life's work centered on this school. Felice had been an intelligence officer in the British Eighth Army during World War II and served as a liaison officer under General George Patton in preparation for the invasion of Sicily and the Italian mainland.
