NTUC Downtown East is an entertainment hub located in Pasir Ris, Singapore. It is 147,000 square metres in area and was officially opened on 5 November 2000. It is run by NTUC club. It provides leisure and entertainment for families and youths. It competes with the two Integrated Resorts, especially Resorts World Sentosa.
The first Cathay Cinema was located at the Cathay Building on 2 Handy Road, Singapore. It was the first air-conditioned cinema building in Singapore, opening on 3 October 1939 with the film The Four Feathers. [2] The cinema had a seating capacity of 1,321 and ancillary spaces such as a women's lounge and a spacious lounge bar. [3]

Golden Village is a cinema operator in Singapore and a subsidiary of Orange Sky Golden Harvest, a Hong Kong-based film production company. [1] Established in 1992 as a joint venture between Golden Harvest and Village Roadshow, the company operates 15 multiplexes and cineplexes across Singapore. [2]
In November 1997, the cinema converted into a shopping mall, Toa Payoh Entertainment Centre, comprising retail outlets and a 5 hall cineplex. Due to declining ticket sales for the cinema and little customers to the Entertainment Centre, the Toa Payoh Entertainment Centre was closed down on 9 December 2010. [ 17 ]
In 2000, it was closed and partially demolished for redevelopment. Elements of the old Cathay Cinema, including its façade which was conserved as a national monument, together with a modern-day design by Paul Tange of Tange Associates Japan and RDC Architects Pte Ltd Singapore, were incorporated into the new building.
