The Bayshore Railway company was founded as a subsidiary of the Southern Pacific to build the Bayshore Cutoff. [12] Construction started in 1904 [ 13 ] and was completed in 1907 [ 14 ] at a cost of $7 million [ 15 ] (equivalent to $167 million in 2023 [ 16 ] ), one of the most expensive rail lines constructed to date. Groundbreaking ceremonies were held in South San Francisco for the Bayshore Highway on September 11, 1924. The railroad planned to build an extensive terminal facility in Visitacion Valley that would serve as the primary maintenance and marshaling facility for the San Francisco Peninsula .
