The original cathedral in what was the city of Puerto Rico (changed to San Juan Bautista in 1521) was constructed from wood in 1521. It was destroyed by a hurricane and the current church construction began in 1535, being practically completed in 1802, later in 1905 an upper portion to the facade was added.

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista (English: Church of Saint John the Baptist) in Maricao, Puerto Rico is a church built during 1890-c.1898. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, [ 1 ] and on the Puerto Rico Register of Historic Sites and Zones in 2000.
The park is part of the San Juan Bautista Plaza Historic District, along with the adjacent Mission San Juan Bautista and the Juan de Anza House southeast of the park. The district was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970. [2] [4] It is also a site on the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail.
