A megalopolis (/ ˌ m ɛ ɡ ə ˈ l ɒ p ə l ɪ s /) or a supercity, [1] also called a megaregion, [2] is a group of metropolitan areas which are perceived as a continuous urban area through common systems of transport, economy, resources, ecology, and so on. [2]
Geographers had identified 25 such areas as of October 2005, [32] as compared with 19 megacities in 2004 and only nine in 1985. This increase has happened as the world's population moves towards the high (75–85%) urbanization levels of North America and Western Europe.
