A time signature (also known as meter signature, [1] metre signature, [2] and measure signature) [3] is an indication in music notation that specifies how many note values of a particular type are contained in each measure . The time signature indicates the meter of a musical movement at the bar level.
In simple quintuple meter, the 5 may be replaced as 2+3 8 or 2+1+2 8 for example. [1] A time signature of 15 8, however, does not necessarily mean the music is in a compound quintuple meter. It may, for example, indicate a bar of triple meter in which each beat is subdivided into five parts.
The use of asymmetrical rhythms – sometimes called aksak rhythm (the Turkish word for "limping") – also became more common in the 20th century: such metres include quintuple as well as more complex additive metres along the lines of 2+2+3 time, where each bar has two 2-beat units and a 3-beat unit with a stress at the beginning of each unit.
A time signature of 18 8 or 18 16, however, does not necessarily mean that the bar is a sextuple metre with each beat divided into three. It may, for example, be used to indicate a bar of triple metre in which each beat is subdivided into six parts. [1] In this case, the metre is sometimes characterized as "triple sextuple time". [1]
