It is registered as a private limited liability company under the Companies Act. It is also the largest maritime educational training facility approved by the Directorate of Merchant Shipping in Sri Lanka. Established in 1990, The main CINEC Campus is located in Malabe with branches in Colombo (Metro Branch), Jaffna and Trincomalee.
It was earlier called the National Institute of Fisheries and Nautical Engineering. [1] [2] The objective of the university is to conduct academic and professional education and vocational training activities in fisheries, marine and nautical engineering to fulfill and develop the needs of the fisheries and allied sector in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Naval and Maritime Academy was established on 15 January 1967, and was subsequently commissioned on 15 July 1967 with Instructor Commander M. G. S. Perera as the first Commandant. [1] [2] NMA hold the ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System Certification awarded by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution in 2007.
The course consists of a two- year academic study period and one-year industrial training. The first-year subjects are designed mainly to equalize, consolidate and improve the students' knowledge in basic sciences and to introduce the specialized discipline of study to which he/she has been selected.
However, on 1 May 1996 HNDE was connected with the Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education, which was mainly under the ministry of education & higher education. The University of Ceylon was the only university in Sri Lanka (earlier Ceylon) from 1942 until 1972. It had several constituent campuses at various locations around Sri Lanka. The University of Ceylon Act No. 1 of 1972, replaced it with the University of Sri Lanka which existed from 1973 to 1978.
The Hardy Advanced Technological Institute [5] is located in Ampara, Sri Lanka. [6] Founded in 1956 by Prof. Allen Hardy as the Technical Training Institute with aid from the Colombo Plan, Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Asia Foundation, it was renamed as Hardy Senior Technical Institute (HSTI) in 1967.
