The Washington State Cougars football program is the intercollegiate American football team for Washington State University, located in Pullman, Washington.The team competes at the NCAA Division I level in the FBS and is a member of the Pac-12 Conference (Pac-12) Known as the Cougars, the first football team was fielded in 1894.
Washington State won the 1916 Rose Bowl, finished the season at 10–0 and outscored its opponents 204–10. In 1915, WSC was awarded the opportunity to play in the Rose Bowl Game and was set to play Brown University , which had lost only one game, to Harvard University (who in turn lost to Cornell 10–0) by a score of 16–7.
Though the cougar was adopted as Washington State University's mascot in 1919 it was not until 1927 when a cougar cub was presented to the student body of Washington State that Butch T. Cougar was born. [2] The cougar was named Butch after Herbert "Butch" Meeker of Spokane, a WSU football star from the 1920s. [3]
Washington State and Idaho renewed their dormant football rivalry in 1998, and matched up annually in the Battle of the Palouse for a decade. The game was played at Martin Stadium in September, although the 2003 game was played far from the Palouse, 300 miles (500 km) west at year-old Seahawks Stadium, now known as Lumen Field , in Seattle . The 2024 Washington State Cougars football team represented Washington State University in the Pac-12 Conference during the 2024 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Cougars were led by Jake Dickert in his fourth year as head coach. They played home games at Martin Stadium located in Pullman, Washington.
