The Soweto Derby is a football rivalry between Premier Soccer League's Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in South Africa. It was first contested on 24 January 1970. [1] Matches between the two rivals attract a large fanbase.
Spectators poured into the Ellis Park Stadium in the city of Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa, for the local Soweto derby association football match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. There was a 60,000-capacity crowd in the stadium, but reports suggest a further 30,000 more fans were trying to gain entry to the stadium.
The final between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs failed to live up to pre-match expectations, although it did provide a fascinating battle in midfield. Kaizer Chiefs walked away 1–0 winners. The 2001 Vodacom Challenge held special meaning for supporters from both Ghana and South Africa.
The 2022 edition was revamped to include 2 other teams to join the traditional teams, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. After fans submitted their team choices, Pretoria-based club Mamelodi Sundowns and Durban club AmaZulu FC turned out to be the favourites to fill the 3rd and 4th spots in the tournament.
On 13 January 1991, there was a preseason "friendly" association football match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates F.C. The stadium had a capacity of 23,000, but about 30,000 fans were admitted and were not separated according to the team they supported. The referee upheld a goal scored by Chiefs, and supporters of Pirates objected.
