Vaaranam Aayiram (transl. A Thousand Elephants) is a 2008 Indian Tamil-language action drama film [1] written and directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon and produced by V. Ravichandran of Aascar Films. The film stars Suriya in the main dual lead role as father and son alongside Simran, Sameera Reddy (in her Tamil debut) and Ramya.
Simran made her debut in the 1995 film Sanam Harjai, the first Indian film to be shot in New Zealand. [6] As a presenter on musical show Superhit Muqabla she was noticed by Jaya Bachchan, who cast her in ABCL's Tere Mere Sapne, [7] in which she received praise for her performance in the song "Aankh Maarey". Her role as Suriya's wife and mother in Gautham Vasudev Menon's Vaaranam Aayiram was critically acclaimed and she won Filmfare and Vijay awards for the same. She starred in the Tamil films TN-07 AL 4777 and Ainthaam Padai in 2009. She made a brief appearance in Aaha Kalyanam in 2014 and Trisha Illana Nayanthara in 2015. [2]
Sameera Reddy was born on 14 December 1978 in Bombay (present day Mumbai), Maharashtra [2] to a Telugu father and a Mangalorean Konkani mother. [3] [4] Her mother Nakshatra, [5] referred to as Niki by her daughters and the media, was a microbiologist and worked with an NGO.
Gautham Vasudev Menon (born 25 February 1973) is an Indian film director, screenwriter, film producer and actor who predominantly works in Tamil film industry. [2] He has also directed Telugu and Hindi films that were either simultaneously shot with or remakes of his own Tamil films.
