Menard County is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 1,962. [1] The county seat is Menard. [2] The county was created in 1858 and later organized in 1871. [3] It is named for Michel Branamour Menard, the founder of Galveston, Texas. [4]
The town of Fort McKavett, Texas, grew within and beyond the fort's grounds until the late 1920s. Thereafter it began a long decline until it became a ghost town by the end of the 20th century. Preservation of the fort began in 1968 and on July 14, 1971, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places .
