The Coney Island Yard Electric Motor Repair Shop is a historic motor repair shop for subway trains located at the Coney Island Complex. It was built between 1925 and 1927 and is a simple two-story, box-shaped brick-clad building lit by multiple banks of large, multi-paned windows and a massive sawtooth skylight. [44]
The buildings are positioned to allow a sequence of courtyards, playgrounds, and ball courts between them; a school and community building are part of the site plan, and two curving pedestrian pathways cut through the grounds. The buildings have one of three shapes, viewed from overhead: a capital "H," lowercase "h," and a "T" shape.
The facility became the location of the company's central repair shop in 1947 when the 65th Street Shops closed. [76] In 1948, Third Avenue's central repair shop was moved again to a facility in Yonkers, [76] while the Kingsbridge Depot ceased serving trolleys and began serving buses in 1948. [5] [62] In 1962, it was acquired by the MaBSTOA. [5]
The housing project is also served by four bus routes: the B57, B62, B67, and B69, all of which run right through the housing project. All of these routes also go to downtown Brooklyn and connect with the Jay Street complex. [25] In contrast to other places, subway service to the Farragut Houses area has declined over the decades.
The Brooklyn Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, George Washington Bridge, and Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge were the world's longest suspension bridges when opened in 1883, [2] 1903, [3] 1931, [4] and 1964 [5] respectively. There are 789 bridges and tunnels in New York.
