Carruthers began playing in Bennie Moten's ensemble in 1928. He worked in St. Louis, Missouri early in the next decade with Dewey Jackson and Fate Marable, then joined the band of Jimmie Lunceford in 1932. He recorded with Lunceford often and remained a member of his orchestra until Lunceford's death in 1947. [2]

Jacob Carruthers was born in Texas and attended Phyllis Wheatley High School in Houston, TX, before going to Samuel Huston College, where he earned a BA degree in 1950.In 1951, he joined the United States Air Force,and after serving, he achieved a master's degree in government from Texas Southern University in 1958.

George Robert Carruthers (October 1, 1939 – December 26, 2020) [1] [2] was an American space physicist and engineer. Carruthers perfected a compact and very powerful ultraviolet camera/spectrograph for NASA to use when it launched Apollo 16 in 1972.
In a book by Louis Davidson, Herseth lists a few of the players he admired and whose playing most influenced his. They include Louis Davidson, Harry Glantz, and Maurice André. Herseth also admired the Swedish tenor Jussi Björling and Frank Sinatra. His ancestors came from Norway.
