As the invaders take the castle, Macbeth is confronted by Macduff, whom he taunts for not being born of a woman. Macduff reveals that he was born by Caesarean section and thus did not have a natural childbirth. Macbeth realises too late that he has misinterpreted the witches' prophecy and, in a duel with Macduff, is killed offstage.
