The official history of Chelmsford County High School between 1906 and 1982 is chronicled in "A History of Chelmsford County High School" by Mary Kenyon. The school was built in 1906, and officially opened in May 1907, with its first Headmistress Mabel Vernon-Harcourt. It had 76 pupils on the school roll.

It became known as St John Payne Roman Catholic School after Pope Paul VI canonized John Payne, one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales on 25 October 1970. In 1977 the former Chelmsford Technical High School building was acquired by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brentwood and this is now known as the Aquinas building.
