The -900 retains the A330-300 fuselage. TAP Air Portugal was the launch operator of this variant. The A330-900 retains the fuselage length of the A330-300 and the similarly sized four-engined A340-300. Cabin optimisation allows ten additional seats on the A330-900 (310 passengers) with 18-inch-wide economy seats. [15]

There are 1,798 firm orders for all versions of the Airbus A330; 1,479 for the A330ceo (current engine option) and a further 319 for the A330neo (new engine option), of which a total of 1,470 A330ceo and 141 A330neos have been delivered as of end of September 2024.
The first 242 t (534,000 lb) A330-300 was delivered to Delta Air Lines in May 2015. In 2000, it was reported that Airbus was studying an A330-300 version with a higher gross weight. It was named A330-300HGW and had a takeoff weight of 240 tonnes (530,000 lb), 7 tonnes (15,000 lb) greater than the -300's weight at the time.
Delta operates the world's largest fleets of the Airbus A220, Boeing 717, and Boeing 757, the largest passenger fleet of the Boeing 767, and the largest Airbus A330 fleet of any US airline. Delta has historically preferred purchasing or leasing used aircraft or using older-generation models to keep initial acquisition costs down.
The older Airbus A340-300 aircraft were withdrawn from service in April 2015, as rising costs had made it less economical to run the type. Virgin Atlantic had begun to replace the A340-300 on routes with the two-engine A330-300 and 787-9. The final Virgin Atlantic A340-300 flight was made on 9 April, landing at Heathrow early on 10 April. [29]
