The first successful mechanical trencher for drainage tile was James B. Hill's Buckeye Steam Traction Ditcher, invented in the late 1880s.
A 1902 Buckeye Traction Ditcher on display at the Hancock Historical Museum. Hill worked as a drainage tiler in northwestern Ohio in the 1870s and 1880s, during which time he devised a wheel trencher that he later named the Buckeye Traction Ditcher (U.S. Patent 523-790; July 31, 1894 [ 2 ] ).
Buckeye Steam Traction Ditchers were the first successful trenching machines used for laying drainage tile. The museum's ditcher was designated an International Historical Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society for Mechanical Engineers .
