In electrical engineering, a disconnector, disconnect switch or isolator switch is a type of switching device with visible contacts, used to ensure that an electrical circuit is completely de-energized for service or maintenance.
A motor control center (MCC) is an assembly to control some or all electric motors in a central location. It consists of multiple enclosed sections having a common power bus and with each section containing a combination starter, which in turn consists of motor starter , fuses or circuit breaker , and power disconnect . An isolator is not, it should only be used when the installation is drawing no power, i.e. the main switch in the consumer unit is off. When a supply is switched off under load, some degree of electrical arcing takes place across the contacts. A switch is designed to safely handle this.
A sectionalizer is generally not rated to interrupt fault current however it often has a larger Basic Insulation Level, allowing some sectionalizers to be used as a point of isolation. Each sectionalizer detects and counts fault current interruptions by the recloser (or circuit breaker).
Barrier isolator, a device that provides a physical barrier between a laboratory technician and a work process; Optical isolator, a directional device in optical fiber communications; Opto-isolator, a directional device in electronics; Vibration isolator, any of various devices to isolate connected parts of an assembly from each other's vibrations
A centrifugal switch is an electric switch that operates using the centrifugal force created from a rotating shaft, most commonly that of an electric motor or gasoline engine. The switch is designed to activate or de-activate as a function of the rotational speed of the shaft.
Thermoswitches or PTC thermistors which are embedded in the motor windings mostly reliably fulfil this task. They trip when the temperature limit has been exceeded and the controls switch off the motor. The positioner [1] is supplied with a setpoint [2] and an actual value [3]. The motor is controlled until the actual value is identical to the ...
