It was named after the fort that was built since the King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke (Rama I)'s reign, when he planted Bangkok to be the new capital in 1782. According to royal customs, forts were ordered to be constructed, altogether there were 14 citadel forts that were built, of which only two remain, there are Mahakan Fort and Phra Sumen Fort.
Pom Prap Sattru Phai was established in 1915 when the districts of Bangkok were overhauled and replaced by 25 amphoes (districts). Later, two of the original 25, Sam Yot and Nang Loeng, were merged into Pom Prap Sattru Phai. The district was named after a fort (pom in Thai) south of present Nang Loeng Market.
Its name after a fort was called "Pom Prap Sattru Phai", southward of Nang Leong Ban Yuan (near Nopphawong Bridge in present day). It was one of the eight forts built along two banks of Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem according to the King Mongkut (Rama IV)'s orders.
