Register was born in 1939 [2] in New York City to Dorothy Deming Pratt Register (1909-1998) . Register graduated from the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, with B.A. in Literature in 1961, he met his wife Catherine Richards in a photography class at Pasadena Art Center where he studied commercial art.

Sigmar Polke (13 February 1941 – 10 June 2010) was a German painter and photographer.. Polke experimented with a wide range of styles, subject matters and materials. In the 1970s, he concentrated on photography, returning to paint in the 1980s, when he produced abstract works created by chance through chemical reactions between paint and other products.
