The tunica albuginea is the fibrous envelope that extends the length of the corpus cavernosum penis and corpus spongiosum penis. It is a bi-layered structure that includes an outer longitudinal layer and an inner circular layer.
The tunica albuginea is a dense, [1] [2] blue-white [3] layer of fibrous tissue surrounding the testis. [ 1 ] [ 4 ] It is the middle of three envelopes forming the capsule of the testis; it is deep to the visceral layer of tunica vaginalis , and superficial to the tunica vasculosa testis (vascular layer of testis) .
Each lobule is contained in one of the intervals between the fibrous septa which extend between the mediastinum testis and the tunica albuginea, and consists of from one to three, or more, minute convoluted tubes, the seminiferous tubules (tubuli seminiferi).
The septa testis are fibrous partitions of the testis dividing the testis into compartments - the lobules of the testis. The septa are formed by extensions of the tunica albuginea - the dense fibrous connective tissue surface covering of the testis - into the substance of the testis.
This septum is composed of multiple strands of connective tissue, similar to that of the tunica albuginea. [3] It is thick and complete behind, where the corpora cavernosa become independent and form separate crura , [ 3 ] but it is imperfect in the front, where it consists of a series of vertical bands arranged like the teeth of a comb; it is ...
Blood can leave the erectile tissue only through a drainage system of veins around the outside wall of the corpus cavernosum. The expanding spongy tissue presses against a surrounding dense tissue (tunica albuginea) constricting these veins, preventing blood from leaving. The penis becomes rigid as a result.
Tunica vaginalis (visceral lamina), and 12. Cavity of tunica vaginalis. Section of a testicle of a steer, blood vessels injected with red gelatine. 1 parenchyma , 2 mediastinum testis, 3 tunica albuginea , 4 tail of epididymis , 5 head of epididymis, 6 spermatic cord with convoluted testicular artery
Seminomas are usually confined by the tunica albuginea and rarely extend to peritesticular structures. Lymphatic spread to retroperitoneal lymph nodes and hematogenous metastases to lung, brain, or both are evident in about 25% of patients at the time of presentation. [citation needed]
