Bate was born the third son of Isle of Wight hoteliers [3] Hubert George Cookson Bate (son of George Harry Bate, a hairdresser and trichologist, of Stourbridge; died 1986) and Cecile Marjorie Canadine (died 1973). Bate was educated at King Edward VI School, Stourbridge, [4] and trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama (gold medal).

Trevor John Sorbie MBE (13 March 1949 – 8 November 2024) was a Scottish celebrity hairdresser and businessman. He is credited as the creator of the wedge haircut and was a four-time winner of British Hairdresser of the Year.
