The earlier episodes were subsequently re-released as part of this series, but renumbered as "Adventure 8" through "13" to take into account their later chronological placement. A DVD box set featuring all 13 episodes was released on May 25, 2007, which included a soundtrack CD and a set of 31 tarot cards illustrated by Hirohiko Araki.

Sanrio Anime World Masterpiece Theater (サンリオアニメ世界名作劇場, Sanrio Anime Sekai Meisaku Gekijō) is a 13-episode anime series produced by Sanrio and animated by Group TAC. Each episode features two stories (a 16-minute and a 8-minute story), totalling 26 stories.
The 26-episode season 1 (or the first part), released between December 1988 and June 1989, covers the volumes 1 and 2 of the original novels, adding some prequel stories (episodes 9 and 11) and original stories (parts of episodes 13 and 14). The 28-episode season 2, released between June 1991 and February 1992, covers the volumes 3 to 5.
