The Montgomery Dam is a gravity dam on the Fox River in Montgomery, Illinois. The dam was built for flood control and navigation in 1969 as a part of the Stratton project [ 1 ] dam system [ 2 ] which was designed to keep the river navagable from the Wisconsin border to the confluence with the Illinois River .
The Gray–Watkins Mill is located on the southeast corner of River and Mill Streets in Montgomery. Built in 1853, its original purpose was as a water-powered turbine flour mill on the Fox River. It operated until 1916, when ice in the river destroyed the dam. Electricity allowed the mill a replacement power source until it shut down in 1922.
Illinois Route 25 runs along the east side of the Fox River, also leading to Aurora and Oswego. According to the 2010 census, Montgomery has a total area of 9.512 square miles (24.64 km 2), of which 9.34 square miles (24.19 km 2) (or 98.19%) is land and 0.172 square miles (0.45 km 2) (or 1.81%) is water. [11]
