Star Trek: The Next Generation is an American science fiction television series which aired in syndication from September 1987 through to May 1994. It is the second live-action series of the Star Trek franchise and comprises a total of 176 (DVD and original broadcast) or 178 (syndicated) episodes over 7 seasons.
The Enterprise arrives at Tyrus 7A to oversee a fledgling mining technology, a "particle fountain", engineered by Dr. Farallon. While on the planet, the crew observe the use of small machines called Exocomps that Dr. Farallon claims can analyze a problem, replicate the correct tool to repair it, and "learn" this for future situations.
Nerdist ranked this episode the number one best episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, on a list of the top ten episodes. Writer Katharyn Powers was invited to pitch a story for The Next Generation as she was friends with Star Trek writer D. C. Fontana. [1] Alongside her writing partner Michael Baron, Powers pitched a story involving a reptilian race called the "Tellisians" who followed a code of honor similar to that of the samurai. [2]
Zack Handlen of The A.V. Club gave the episode a grade B−. [2] Keith DeCandido of Tor.com rated it 5 out of 10.
