Sumter County is a county located in the U.S. state of South Carolina.As of the 2020 census, the population was 105,556. [2] Its county seat is Sumter. [3] Sumter County comprises the Sumter, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Columbia-Sumter-Orangeburg, SC Combined Statistical Area. [4]
By 1929, it was established from the Sumter–Lee county line, southwest of Rembert, to SC 30 in Manville. In 1940, it was extended westward to end at U.S. Route 521 (US 521) in Rembert. In about 1945, the highway was extended again, across SC 261 , and then southward to Hagood and Horatio to end at SC 261 in Sanders Corner .

[1] The first use of the name "Sumter Mall" was for a 20-acre downtown mall that became known as Sumter Towne Mall. Construction of this mall was announced by Plaza Associates Inc. in 1973. [2]
