The community was named after the Wright Family, which owned land in the area, and for whom the township is named. The community had a post office from 1848 until 1864 and again from 1877 until 1903. Wright laid out lots in a non-conventional circular pattern, with the interstitial areas to be held in common. [2] Initial plans called for the development of 21 houses on the site. [ 3 ] From the late 1940s to 1960, five of the lots were developed: four with designs by Wright and one designed by Taliesin School fellow Francis "Will" Willsey.

Chauncey M. Brewer was born in Oneonta, New York in 1814. He worked in a country store until 1835, when he and boyhood friend Charles T. Gorham moved to Clinton, Michigan. In 1836, the two moved to Marshall and opened a general store. The store prospered, and in 1838 they a new brick store in the town constructed of brick.
