African American Cemetery in Rye. The African American Heritage Trail of Westchester County [1] in New York was created in 2004 to help preserve and interpret the historic landmark places that help tell the narratives of women and men of African descent who have made significant contributions to an American identity. The Timothy Knapp House is considered the oldest residential property in Westchester County, New York, having been built in the 1660s. The property has been owned by only 5 families between 1663 and 1992, when it was acquired by the Rye Historical Society.
In 1943 a wing was added to the building to house the Hufeland Memorial Library. This collection comprised several thousand items pertaining to the history of Westchester and were assembled by Otto Hufeland of Mount Vernon, New York. The collection is currently on loan to the Westchester County Historical Society. [3]
