The Black Diamond Apple (Chinese: gāla guǒ; 嘎啦果) is a rare variety from the family of Huaniu apples that is cultivated in the Tibetan region of Nyingchi. Despite what the name suggests, the apple is a purple hue with white pulp on the inside. [1] [2] Its unique color is due to the region's high altitude of over 3,500 m.
In color, the ripe fruit of the cultivated strains range from glossy light yellow-orange to dark red-orange depending on the species and variety. [1] They similarly vary in size from 1.5 to 9 cm (1 ⁄ 2 to 3 + 1 ⁄ 2 in) in diameter, and in shape the varieties may be spherical, acorn-, or pumpkin-shaped. [3]
