Crews of five athletes alternately push their canoe across the ice on the frozen parts of the river, and paddle in a river with currents of four knots, tides of over 15 feet, and ice blocks weighing a few tonnes blown by the wind. The ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships are an international event involving long distance surf ski ocean races. Races are divided into single-paddler (SS1) senior, junior and masters age-group categories.
